I recommend this strong piece by Nick Cohen in Standpoint magazine out of Britain, on the downward spiral of the anti-free-speech movement.
Related: Three of my recent pieces on the state of free speech:
* On the German decision: “Is Republishing Hitler’s Mein Kampf the Correct Decision?“ (Portuguese translation.)
* On censorship in British universities: “Is Free Speech Dead in Universities?“ (Portuguese translation.)
* On politicized Islam: “No Reformation for Islam, Please.“
And from earlier, on the philosophical roots of attacks on free speech in the U.S. and elsewhere:
* “Free Speech and Postmodernism: Why Group Warfare Has Replaced Academic Debate“ (and in Korean translation, German translation, and in Kindle e-book format.)
Took time out of a busy schedule to read Nick Cohen’s article: breath-taking. It’s long and convoluted (for good reasons) but I urge everyone interested in the issue of free speech vs. political correctness to make time for it.
The FIRE link is not working (the PDF does not download.)
Thanks, Lorenzo. Changed it to another location, with an HTML version.
