Sex scandals in Philosophy departments:
* Miami’s Colin McGinn resigned.
* Colorado’s Graeme Forbes resigned.
* Yale’s Thomas Pogge is under serious investigation (thanks to Alex Tabarrok for the link).
We might expect philosophers — especially those who specialize in ethics — to be more principled than the average. So Eric Schwitzgebel’s question is an important one: Are professional ethicists are good people?
Yet sexuality in the workplace is not a simple morality play, and my analysis of the professional ethics issues is here: When Can Professors Have Sex With Their Students?
We should also note that professional ethicists also often come to believe that ethics is a matter of subjective whim, or highly variable socially, or a rationalization of non-rational impulses, and so on — and those beliefs no doubt influence their behavior in all areas of life, including sexuality.
Update: Pogge responds here.
