My article “Ayn Alissa Rand (1905-1982)” was first published in the IEP in 2001. The original article focused on Rand’s life and times and some issues in her ethics. This update expands that treatment slightly, mentions a broader range of criticisms, and adds to the bibliography some of the scholarship since then.
The encyclopedia is edited by James Fieser (University of Tennessee at Martin) and Bradley Dowden (California State University, Sacramento) and contains a wide range of professional entries on major philosophers and philosophical issues.
Suggestions are welcome in the comments below for future updates.
At the close of the Life section, you leave out the confirmed fact that Rand received social assistance in her old age. The institute’s argument that it was consistant with her beliefs is does not hold up.
Ideas and actions are not divorced from one another. She could not live by her cruel creed which says something.
Hi Mario:
Taking back funds that were taken from you — that is perfectly moral.
