An open question to me is whether the anti-liberals of both left and right are a noisy minority only or a numerous and well-entrenched many. We don’t have good demographics yet. From the reasonable left, Helen Pluckrose here offers her assessment and a strategy.
A good question – and one is much tempted to consider an anthropological – rather than short-term cultural – point of view: “The values of the weak prevail because the strong have taken them over as devices of leadership…” (‘The Will to Power,’ 863)
With TARP (Bush), TALF (Obama), and associated bailouts millions of people has wealth transfered away from them(had to sacrifice) so capital could go to saving the companies that caused the problem. There were complaints to be sure but the vast majority were not formed from anything related to liberalism. It seems like a pretty entrenched set of ideas would be required to allow that to happen.
