I appreciate very much this comment from David Sabo, in response to my conversation with the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia.
My job is to get students up to speed on the issues, the major arguments and counter-arguments, and so to put them in a position to make informed judgments for themselves. And while professors can and should have something to profess, I never let students know my own conclusions until after they’ve reached that stage — the point at which I know they are able to hold their own and by which point they know me well enough to know that differences of opinion will not lead to arbitrary grading.
