This is really more of a response to your documentary on Netflix and to one of your comments in a previous blog. I agree that philosophy played a critical role in the establishment of the Nazi Party. I applaud you for examining the role that eugenics played in the development of Nazi thought. I think you are also correct in placing great emphasis on the contributions made by Nietzsche to the development of Nazism. I do think that you fail to grasp the true significance of Nietzsche. Nietzsche led the final wave of an assault that began with the French Enlightenment. The next phase took place in Germany in the form of the Higher Criticism. The third wave was launched in Britain by the Uniformitarian Geologists who paved the way for Darwin. Nietzsche’s work was simply the culmination of an unholy attack launched against Biblical Christianity. I also disagree with your assessment of Galileo. The trial of Galileo was the exclamation point for the Reformation. Galileo provided physical evidence that the Council of Trent was in error. The Catholic Church’s teaching of a geocentric universe was the result of the Scholastic movement. Catholicism had elevated the word of man to the level of the Word of God. The Council of Trent made that elevation of man’s word official. Galileo provided dramatic proof as to the rightness of sola scriptura.
I appreciate your several comments here, Denny, both pro and con. You are right that the issues raised in the documentary do lead to many other complex historical issues, each of which need fuller discussion.
