For years I’ve used the Borden case in my Critical Thinking course. The case became part of American folklore, generating anonymous ditties like this:
Lizzie Borden took an ax
And gave her mother forty whacks,
And when she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.
Yet she was found Not Guilty at trial. Why? I use law professor John Henry Wigmore’s write-up (PDF version, Word version) of the evidence and the trial, which includes images of the floor plan of the Borden house, where the double murder took place.
